Preface by Harry Easterly, Jr.; a six-page appreciation by Ben Crenshaw. Facsimile edition; originally published in Edinburgh, D. Douglas, 1887. Limited #1046 of 1400 copies. Original blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine in cream slipcase. Second in the USGA rare book series. Early chapters include history, praise of the game, clubs and caddies; later chapters focus on instruction. Simpson "was a former captain of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. Referring to the first printing of this title, Murdoch states, "One of the great classic books of golf literature. It includes the first use of photographs to demonstrate the swing." First edition. 8vo. xii, 186, (2) pp. Publisher's illustrated boards sympathetically rebacked preserving much of the original spine, top edge gilt, label with a gift inscription dated 1949 to the front pastedown, this mounted over an earlier bookplate partially visible underneath. 20 photographic plates plus 10 diagrams in the text. Some foxing to the boards and the fore and lower edges of the text block, the contents generally very good, light wear to the edges of the boards. A classic work, featuring some of the earliest photographic illustrations of golf shots and swings. Simpson was one of Robert Louis Stevenson's closest friends, and was immortalised as "the Cigarette" in "The Inland Voyage". Donovan and Murdoch, 3860.
