Alfred A. Knopf, 1965. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/Fair. 327 pages. Collection of book reviews, essays, reminiscences and parodies, first published in 1955-65. Includes "Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu", on Ted Williams. 8vo, yellow cloth with usual Knopf gilt lettering, top edge tinted brown, unusually heavy foxing to boards, soil to their exposed edges, only faint foxing to text-block edges, minimal shelf wear, in unclipped, age-toned DJ with 1" tear in front panel at top, raggedy along crown, normal shelf wear to bottom, light foxing to interior. "Good" rating is a compromise between the foxed boards and the mostly clean pages - only one margin bracket in pencil observed, and a tiny pencil note on rfep.

Synopsis

John Updike was born in Shillington, Pennsylvania, in 1932. He graduated from Harvard College in 1954 and spent a year in Oxford, England, at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art. From 1955 to 1957 he was a member of the staff of The New Yorker . His novels have won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Rosenthal Foundation Award, and the William Dean Howells Medal. In 2007 he received the Gold Medal for Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. John Updike died in January 2009.
