Cleveland, Ohio: J. F. Ryder. Good with no dust jacket. 1862. Unknown. Softcover. Albumen photograph (Albumen silver print from glass negative? ). Paper pasted on card, of Randolph Station (presume in Pennsylvania). Print quite faded and yellow/brown in tones. Card surround is grubby and lightly spotted, but a scarce image with a Locomotive shownto the side and the small station in the distance. Print surrounded by a double border in gold and 'Atlantic and Great Western Railway' above the image in dark brown Calligraphic type. Lower centre under image, stamped in gold = J. F. Ryder, Photographist, Cleveland, O. Also on the lower right hand side in faded ink someone has written in ink - "Randolph Station". James Fitzallen Ryder was born in April 1826 and he grew up in Tompkins County, near Ithaca, New York. Ryder settled in Cleveland, Ohio; and opened his own studio by 1856. NO date shown but in 1862 Ryder received a major commission from the Atlantic and Great Western Railway to photograph recent construction and completed sections of its Meadville Line, Pennsylvania. Image and surround measures = 34.7 cm x 27 cm (13.7" x 10.7") and the photo itself = 23.8 cm long and 18.8 cm wide (7.4" x 9.4") . Scarce USA Railway photo. See Image. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
