Andrew Taylor Still (born August 6, 1828, near Jonesville, Virginia, U.S. â died December 12, 1917, Kirksville, Missouri) was the American founder of osteopathy, and osteopaths believed that remedies for disease are available in the correctly adjusted body, obtained through manipulative techniques and concomitant medical and surgical therapy. His Britannica dot com entry (penned by Amy Tikkanen) notes that Still acquired some medical training from his father and did attend a college in Kansas City and then began to "practice medicine" in about 1849, becoming also an Abolitionist and served in the Civil War. He lost three children in an epidemic and began to formulate his principles in osteopathy in the 1870s. A professional school, the Andrew Taylor Still School of Osteopathy and Surgery, was "founded by George Laughlin in 1922, which was renamed the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1971." Still himself established the Journal of Osteopathy in 1894, and it continues to this day.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
