Boston: Phillips, Sampson and Company, 1858. 8vo. Half-title. Engraved title and eight plates. Original brown pebbled cloth stamped in blind, spine gilt-lettered. Repairs to joints, some wear at edges. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with the engraved title and third and fourth endpapers headed "Poetry and the Drama" and "School Books". BAL 8781. A good copy of Holmes's famous compendium of aphorisms ("Sin has many tools, but a lie is a handle which fits them all"), and light verse. He first wrote these for the New England Magazine in 1831 and 1832, then published them in this book form in 1858.
Synopsis
I was just going to say, when I was interrupted, that one of the many ways of classifying minds is under the heads of arithmetical and algebraical intellects. All economical and practical wisdom is an extension or variation of the following arithmetical formula: 2+2=4. Every philosophical proposition has the more general character of the expression A+B=C. We are mere operatives, empirics, and egotists, until we learn to think in letters instead of figures.
