About This Item

Weidenfeld & Nicolson, London, 1958. First Edition. Hardcover. Good Condition/Fair. Illustrator: Maps. Blue coloured boards with silver coloured titles to the back strip. Illustrated coloured dustwrapper, by Werner Stein, with red and white coloured titles to the front panel and yell and black coloured titles to the back strip. On January 11, 1954, an avalanche hit the small alpine village of Blons in the West Austrian Alpine region. While the rescuers were desperately searching for survivors and bodies after the avalanche, a more powerful one hit the town, obliterating houses, and, causing either the death or maiming of every sixth resident of the town. This is "... the story of the town, before, during and after the avalanches: a story of fear and courage, of greed and of kindness, of petty envy and of greatness" -- from the front fold over panel blurb. Softening and fading to the back strip, with rubbing of the top book corners and lower book edges. Some marks to the front panel is with browning and faint foxing to the text block edges. Lighter browning and scattered foxing to the pages. Offset tanning and foxing to the endpapers and original bookseller's rubber stamp to the lower left hand corner of the free front endpaper and there are the remains of a sticker to the lower right hand corner of the front paste down. The top right hand corner of the free front endpaper has been clipped. Chipping to the dustwrapper corners and back strip edges – commensurate with fading of the book underneath. Creasing to the top dustwrapper edge with rubbing of the panels and handling marks to the rear panel. An erosion market can be seen to the front panel along with the remains of a sticker. Some staining and foxing to the back strip. Browning and staining along with some scattered foxing to the verso. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 190, [2] pages,. Dust Jacket price-clipped.
