About This Item
Philadelphia: A. Lewis, 1873. Hardcover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 16mo. 96 pages. Hardcover bound in original dark brown publisher's cloth with cover designs in blind and with gilt lettering. The binding is worn and bumped but sound. Chipping to the spine ends. A sound copy with secure inner hinges. Text is toned but generally clean. Joseph John Gurney (1788-1847) was a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in England. During his visit to America in the late 1830s to preach against slavery, he objected to some Quakers who focused on inner light rather than the teachings of Jesus, and this led to a schism among American Quakers over that topic.
