About This Item
Two hardcover volumes, first American edition, published by James Pott & Company, 1901. An in-depth history of the Bastille, its construction, rules and regulations, its prisoners, and history. Preface by James Breck Perkins. Volume 1 is 478 pages, with Index and 18 illustrations through the text. Volume 2 is 498 pages, with Index and 16 illustrations through the test. Sturdy red cloth covered cover boards, with an intricate design blind stamped on the spine and front cover along with the title. Unusual cloth covered dust jacket with the title and design on the spines. Dust jackets are intact. Jackets have smudge marks from use and spots of fading, both front and back on both volumes. All lettering and design elements on the spine of the jackets are intact and legible and do not appear to be faded. Cover boards for both volumes are flat, the corners and edges show only minor wear. Gilt to the top edge of both volumes. The red place holder ribbons are no longer intact in either volumes. Volume 1 has a crack at the spine gutter at the Preface, running nearly the entire vertical height of the volume, all text pages are intact and firmly bound though. Volume 2 has a small dot of a stain, about 1/2" circular, from the pastedown through the title page - appears to be a spot of label adhesive that has bled through the pages. Volume 2 has a crack at the spine gutter at page 168, though all text pages are firmly bound. No former ownership marks, no writing on the text pages. Edges of the text block are clean. These are not library discard copies. Very heavy volumes, weighing close to 5 pounds for the two volumes. Attached photos are of the copies we have in our inventory.
