Book Condition: Good; wear and frayed fabric at head, tail, tips and board bottom edges; rear internal hinge shows breaks in the paper but is still holding; front hinge is completely split on the paper but is still held by mull cloth; moisture stain at tail and lower front corner with no penetration to pages. No DJ. Blue cloth boards and spine with gilt lettering on the spine and a gilt banner on the front board with the title. Frontispiece photo present. 356 pp 8vo. This book recounts the first troop engagements at the start of the American Civil War with the bombardment of Fort Sumter and continues through the end of the Peninsular Campaign in July of 1862. During this period the South was wholly on the defensive and the battles were all fought on Southern soil. At the end of this period the Civil War seemed as far from completion as it did on the completion of The First Battle of Bull Run in 1861. A clean presentable copy.
