(Pretoria: Wallachs' Drukkers & Uitgewers Mpy. Beperk, 1960). Die Staatsbiblioteek, Pretoria. Monografieë van die Drukkunsmuseum Nr. 1. 150 x 240mm; original grey card wrappers; pp. 40; black-and-white photographs. Edges of wrappers a bit browned. Very good condition. Afrikaans text with English summary. The newspaper, De Volksstem (later De Volkstem then Die Volkstem), was first published in Pretoria in 1873 under the editorship of Jan F. Cilliers. In 1895 De Volksstem became the first daily newspaper in South Africa. Subsequent editors included Dr F.V. Engelenburg, Gustav Preller and N. Levi. In addition to the newspaper, Cilliers also engaged in commercial printing, and Wallachs' Printers & Publishing Company Limited was formed in 1905. An important contribution towards the history of the Afrikaans language and of Pretoria. .
