About This Item

The Holland Press, London, 1972 reprint in one volume of the 1927 first edition. Limited edition of 350 copies. 2 vols in 1, cloth, large 4to,. xviii, 238, vii, 255 pp. In French. Despite the title, the coverage is limited to books before 1600: Simon had intended to publish further volumes for the 17th and 18th centuries which never appeared. "Mr. Simon did not limit his discussions to authors and books on viticulture, the art of winemaking, table manners, drunkenness, decrees and regulations relating to the wine trade, but included medical books, treatises on agriculture and even the works of classical writers such as Plato, Hippocrates, Homer, Horace, etc. from which he extracted the wine interest. The first volume.. Is devoted entirely to books in all languages printed in the 15th century (Incunables) and describes 182 items. This volume is illustrated by sixty facsimile reproductions of title pages, woodcuts, etc. The second volume, which covers the 16th century... describes 723 items. It is illustrated by 114 reproductions of title pages and woodcuts from Simon's own collection of books, not only giving a picture of 16th century life but also of book illustration in France, Italy, Germany and Switzerland. It contains descriptions of some 240 books not mentioned in Vicaire's Bibliographic Gastronomique. Both volumes contain three indexes: an alphabetical index of authors; a chronological index of dates of publication; and a geographical index of the various presses. In French." - Gabler. Near Fine, top edge duststained, in near Very Good dustwrapper - dustwrapper has some slight marking on front cover and one small closed tear.
