Softcover/NF w/faint creasing to lower back corner. A semi-autobiographical novel. First major work of Iowa-born writer, novelist & teacher Wallace Stegner (1909 - 1993), often quoted for saying the agenda of fiction is to tell the truth. Writtn in 1943, the title is named after the folk song "Big Rock Candy Mountain", about a mythical paradise, and set in the hard times in America after World War I. Protagonist Bo Mason, with wife & two sons in tow, drifts from town to town in the West Coast in search of the big, rock candy mountain where blue birds sing & sparkling lemonade gushes forth from springs --- the elusiveness of Arcadia feeds tension among wife & sons. Self & mutual abuse within the family rise under continual poverty. 563 pgs, written in 10 Sections. A saga when socio-economic systems collapse. Bo tries but fails to provide for his family as he moves from hotel business, to farming, and then illegal rum-running in desperation to no avail.

Synopsis

Bo Mason, his wife, Elsa, and their two boys live a transient life of poverty and despair. Drifting from town to town and from state to state, the violent, ruthless Bo seeks out his fortune—in the hotel business, in new farmland, and, eventually, in illegal rum-running through the treacherous back roads of the American Northwest. Stegner portrays more than thirty years in the life of the Mason family in this masterful, harrwoing saga of people trying to survive during the lean years of the early twentieth century.
