About This Item
Chicago: Big Table, 1956-59. First Edition. Five octavo volumes (all published). Original printed card wrappers; Pp. 152; 122; 120; 141; 125. No. 1 slightly darkened on exterior as usual, with a few spots of staining and soil; red ink marking to no. 5; else minor wear and dusting, but still a tight, well-preserved set, Very Good.
The complete run of this seminal Beat journal, seldom found in such nice condition. Founded by a group of dissident editors from the Chicago Review following that journal's suppression of portions of Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs, Big Table went on to serve as a forum for a number of the most influential emerging writers of the Fifties, including Burroughs (whose Naked Lunch makes its first appearance, in excerpted form, in Volume 1); Jack Kerouac, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Allen Ginsberg, Paul Bowles and many others.
