About This Item
(Johannesburg: Witwatersrand University Press, 1941). "Bantu Studies" Monograph Series, No. 2. 8vo; cloth-backed printed paper over card; pp. vi + 134, incl. index. Some foxing to endpapers and edges. Very good condition. Robert Godfrey (1872-1948) was a missionary, naturalist and lexicographer. "His most satisfactory publication is Birdlore of the Eastern Cape (Johannesburg, 1941). This book, which is a very interesting collection both of birdlore and children's games, explains in detail the Bantu attitude to certain birds and indicates the Bantu interpretation of natural history. In the field of natural science, he worked very closely with Dr John Hewitt, curator of the Albany Museum, Grahamstown, both men being largely responsible for a great increase in our knowledge of the birds of the Eastern Cape." - DSAB III, p. 331 .
