About This Item

London: John Long, 1936. Second Printing. 8vo. Publisher's green cloth (also found in red), titled in gilt to spine, a little rubbed and scuffed to extremities, a trifle duty here and there, but a strong, solid copy. A very good example. 292pp. Internally clean. Bookplate of Sir Willliam Louis Primrose, Baronet, to front flyleaf, along with a discreet private library label to pastedown. Foreword by Dennis Wheatley; shabby chic éminence grise of London society occult, Black Mass on a Tuesday, genteel orgy at the Dorchester Thursday night.

A history of the dark arts, including alchemy, necromancy, witchcraft and all points in between, from the pen of the man who taught Wheatley yoga, guided Crowley through the minefield of London flat rentals, and generally tap danced with skill and resourcefulness all the way from Guyana to the louche drawing rooms of London's occult aristocracy, all brandy, boredom, and Beelzebub.
