About This Item
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1872. First Edition. Small Octavo. 396p., illustrations. Copyright was in late 1871 but not issued until 1872. Even Wright Howes M-275 made this error, however, modern bibliographers have shown there was no earlier issue. Marcy includes many items from his early career to his experiences in Texas to the development of the Northwest. His descripton of Apache territory as "the most unattractive, barren, desolate, God forsaken and (except for its mines) worthless region within the limits of our entire possessions...Arizona is not, in my judgment, destined to become of much significance." Bound in green cloth central gilt stamp depicitng the US falge, boards bordered in black and gilt, brown coated endpapers, only a small amount of rubbing at head of spine. A handsome copy.
