About This Item

Oxford Bibliographical Society, Bodleian Library, Oxford, first edition, 1973. Printed wrappers, 8vo, 25 cm,. iii, 59 pp, ills. From a contemporary review: "This is a study of the printers' ornaments used by the William Bowyers, father and son, between 1699 and 1777, such ornaments being relief cuts. There are reproductions of 319 ornaments, virtually the entire Bowyer stock, and four of their publishers' devices. Notes are provided and appendices list the ornaments by size and in chronological order. Tables show the numbers and kinds of ornaments, new ornaments and total stock annually from 1705 to 1777 and the maximum length and frequency of use for each class of ornament. The reproductions are approximately the same size as the originals. The author has also provided an analytical and descriptive introduction..". Oxford Bibliographical Society. Occasional publication no. 8 Good.
