In this book, tha author traces the history of British new towns and the major phases of their development to the date of publication (1979). Since 1946, 28 new towns had been designated in England, Wales and Scotland. She examines the social and economic changes which altered the new towns concept and produced the "Mark II" round of designations in the 1960s. She also argues that the notion that there was a systematic and unified approach to new towns was largely illusory, and further argues that lack of commitment and direction on the part of central government wasted much of the new towns potential both for their residents and for the wider society..
