About This Item

Oxford Bibliographical Society, Oxford, first edition, 1984. Printed wrappers, 4to, 25 cm,. 70 pp. Approximately 300 entries. Includes sections on Typefounders' specimens and Printers' specimens and appendices covering: (1) Works that draw attention to the types in which they are printed; (2) Works using the material of a named typefounder or punchcutter; (3) Specimens compiled for 'house' use; (4) Specimens of British types printed abroad; (5) Specimens of engraved brass printers' ornaments; and (6) Typefounders' sale catalogues without specimens of type. "Since the specimens of the period covered by this Handlist were often broadsides, or pamphlets, stabbed and stitched in wrappers, it is not surprising that only one copy is known to survive of many of them. It also follows, of course, that we can be sure that a substantial number of the specimens printed have either failed to survive or still remain to be discovered. This Handlist attempts to list all that are at present known. Near Fine.
