"Since the specimens of the period covered by this Handlist were often broadsides, or pamphlets, stabbed and stitched in wrappers, it is not surprising that only one copy is known to survive of many of them. It also follows, of course, that we can be sure that a substantial number of the specimens printed have either failed to survive or still remain to be discovered.
