About This Item

London : Country Life, Ltd., 1924. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 10" by 7.5". Not stated . A first edition of pioneering bird photographer Emma Louise Turner, including the first publication of her award winning photo of the Great Crested Grebe on its nest. A first edition copy of this work, published 1924. With extensive and beautifully shot monochrome photographic plates taken by the author. Collated complete.Written and photographed by E.L. Turner, this work is a thoughtful account of various species of bird in the Norfolk Broads. As the author writes in the preface, "it is not a book for the scientist nor the collector, but for the bird-lover, who may be either, or neither...or all three". Author Emma Louise Turner (1867-1940) became interested in photography after meeting wildlife photographer Richard Kearton in 1900 and shortly after joined the Royal Photographic Society. She travelled extensively around the UK and Europe to photograph various birds, but her main base was in the Norfolk Broads. In the publisher's original green cloth binding with gilt spine title. Externally, smart. Rubbing to front board, affecting title. Minor bumping to extremities. Discolouration to boards due to handling. Ink inscription on front free end paper. Review paste to front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with scattered spotting. Ink inscription opposite half title page. Very Good
