About This Item

First US Edition, stated.

220 p. Contains Appendices (217-220).

Black hardcover with blindstamped publisher's insignia to front cover, silver gilt lettering to spine, lovely red-orange endpapers and textblock with a fine deckled edge, shows very minor shelfwear to exterior, namely to the bottom edge of covers, with a few specks to rear cover, but is internally Fine with the exception of retail markings to top corner of ffep (see photo). The dust jacket shows retail sticker residue, some shelfwear, and a small 1cm closed tear to tip of spine.

From dust jacket:

There have been several instances in our time when famous novelists have turned crime-reporter and tackled the courtroom drama of major trials: Sybille Bedford covered the Bodkin-Adams trial in England and the Jack Ruby trial in Dallas; Rebecca West's The Meaning of Treason had its source in the trial of Klaus Fuchs. But for sheer implausibility and fantasy—for characters and a snarl of plot far in excess of the probabilities of fiction—none could compare with the 1970 trial of the two Hosein brothers for the murder of Mrs. McKay, reported here by the distinguished author of Scenes from Provincial Life.
In the first place, it was singular that the two dark-skinned men, natives of Trinidad, were living in a charming seventeenth-century farmhouse in the heart of the English countryside, the only blacks in a tranquil community of farmers and fox-hunting gentry. In the second place, there was, throughout the
trial, the shadowy figure of a third Hosein brother, never involved except as a secondary witness and yet, one felt, the most forceful of the three. Then, the crimes with which they were charged and indicted involved the kidnapping of the wrong person, and they were prosecuted for murder although no sign of a body was ever discovered nor was there any evidence of the victim's presence in or near their household.
Reporting the course of the trial day by day, William Cooper's acute eye for detail and his equally acute insights into the pressures, tensions and conflicts of such unmentionable factors as race hatred and class antagonism pro-vide a bizarre and tantalizing narrative. The mixture of suspicion, dislike and dependence among the Hosein brothers bears a strong resemblance to the fam-ily relationships of the Karamazovs, in whose lives also the patterns of fear, darkness and violence culminated in murder.
