About This Item

London: A. and C. Black, 1920. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed. 9" by 6.5". Sutton Palmer. A pleasing first edition copy of Geraldine Mitton's charming historical, picturesque and geographical account of the counties of Buckinghamshire and Berkshire; with coloured plates by the renowned English watercolour landscape painter, Sutton Palmer. Geraldine Edith Mitton (G. E. Mitton) was a notable English novelist, biographer and editor, who wrote copious guide-books throughout her career. Harold Sutton Palmer specialised in idyllic rustic landscapes painted in watercolours, with many of his works being included in A & C Black's travel guides (such as this work). Widely praised for his beautiful paintings of Surrey, Berkshire, Devon, The Lake District, and Yorkshire, Sutton's works can now be found in such renowned art galleries as the Victoria and Albert Museum, and also in private collections. Collated, complete with sixty beautiful coloured plates, and a folding sketch map to the rear of the work. In the publisher's original decorative cloth binding. Externally excellent., with minor shelfwear to extremities and head and tail of spine. Slight offsetting, and prior owner's ink inscription to front free-endpaper. Front hinge slightly split and strained after front free-endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Page slightly age toned to extremities, but very bright. The odd light scattered spot to the occasional page. Tissue guard to occasional plate detached, but all present. Very Good Indeed
