About This Item

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1924. First American Edition. Octavo. 22.5cm. Publisher's bottle green cloth titled in gilt to spine. Lacking dustjacket. 372pp. Light wear to edges and spine ends, a little toning of the spine and dulling of the gilt. A very good, strong copy. Internally clean, fore-edge untrimmed, top edge a trifle dusty. Ink ownership of Ralph E. Flanders to front flyleaf, a US Senator for Vermont in the 1950's who took an anti-McArthy/HUAC stance on the grounds that it was distracting America from actual Communist threats by hunting down Hollywood actors. Scott began his career in South East Asia as a journalist, born in Fife in Scotland, but he swiftly rose to influence and is recognised today as having been profoundly instrumental in the imposition of British colonial rule over Burma. His love of the country, and appreciation of its culture are clear in his writing, as was his absolute conviction that British rule was the best thing for the region, but the eye of history is probably less convinced in retrospect.
