Scientific research on the production of Byzantine icons and the techniques used in it has intensified in recent years and has become an increasingly important aspect of the study of Byzantine art. The collaboration of art historians with conservators, organic chemists, physicists, archaeometrists, mineralogists, arboriculturists, agriculturists, computer specialists and others has offered new opportunities for the study of icons. The aim of this book is to take stock of the current situation and to pool recent works and discoveries.
