London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1839. Book. Very good- condition. Hardcover. First Edition. Octavo (8vo). xvi, 352 pages of text. Attractively rebound in three quarter leather. Frontisportrait has an archival mending to the hinge, and is lightly foxed and edgeworn. Previous owner's stamp on bottom of title page, with minor edgewear. The other 9 plates showing scenes and towns have minor foxing. Large folding map colored in outline; backed and strengthened with archival tissue. Errata slip tipped-in at page 1. The final two pages are detached. Howes F242; Cowan, CA & Pac p.88; Zamorano 80 #38; Eberstadt 113:216. This is the first book published in England to relate entirely to California. Cowan: "The changes of time and subsequent history have not disturbed the value of this work, for it is still considered as one of the most important on the subject." First edition..
