Hersey, (1914-1993) was a Pulitzer Prize-winning American writer and journalist considered one of the earliest practitioners of the so-called New Journalism. The Call is a work of historical fiction drawn from the the journals and correspondence of his parents, missionaries to China. Synopsis

The Call is a novel about an American missionary in China from 1906 until the 1950's. This fictional biography is about David Treadup, a composite character based on multiple missionaries to China.  It is supported with diary entries, letters, articles, staff minutes, and other bibliographic accounts.
