About This Item

Introduction by Maxwell Geismar, Personal Appreciation by Meyer Levin, History by Harold U. Ribalow. Near Fine in a Very Good jacket, unclipped ($5.95), faded at the spine and front panel, a small chip at the top edge, partially split at the fold of the front flap. Grey buckram with black ink panel and gilt lettering and rules on the spine. Square and firmly bound, clean internally. Roth's beloved novel of David's coming-of-age in Brooklyn, named one of the 100-best English-language novels since 1923 by TIME Magazine. This copy is inscribed to Hollywood producer Ed Spiegel. Alas, given that no adaptation of the novel exists, Spiegel did not succeed in the arduous journey from book to film.
Synopsis
Call It Sleep is a 1934 novel by Henry Roth. Time magazine described it as "The story of three years in the life of a sensitive Jewish slum-child, told with painstaking and pain-giving fidelity," in the February 25, 1935 edition. While the book sold poorly upon its initial publication, the book received a second life when it was reviewed by literary critic Irving Howe on the front page of The New York Times Book Review on October 25, 1964, and has since sold over a million copies.
