Original green cloth, vignette in gilt to upper cover, spine lettered in gilt; pp. xxvii, 320, 40 [advertisements]; 15 plates (a few folding), 4 maps (3 folding to throw clear, one with repaired tear); cloth a little marked and with light discolouration, toning to fly-leaves, as usual, else a very good copy. First edition. Vandeleur's accounts of his military experiences in Uganda on the Upper Nile, notably against the Arab slave station in Southern Unyoro, and of his various expeditions on the Niger and the Nile. He also offers descriptions along the way of the people and country through which he passes, i.e. introducing British rule by force.
