About This Item

first edition
First edition. STATED: First Published in Great Britain 1980. Hard cover. Sheed & Ward, London, England (1980)
New in new dust jacket. hard bound 236 pages It was a bloody time in English history. Bloody Mary was dead, Queen Elizabeth 1 was on the throne determined to revoke all Mary's ordinances supporting the Pope and Roman Catholic religion. Her Supremacy bill declared her supreme and made it clear the Pope had no authority in England. The Catholic Lords Bishop refused to take the oath and were put under constraint. Edmund Campion, formerly an Anglican, became a Jesuit missionary, was arrested, hanged, drawn, and quartered. His contemporary, also a Jesuit, fled to the Continent and was assigned the task of directing from abroad the Jesuit mission to England. He died at the English College in Rome. This copy of the book and its jacket are new or indistinguishable therefrom and give an interesting insight into the religious persecution of the day, albeit from the Roman Catholic perspective. x; lus 226 pages. One illustration and one map. This edition was available only to members of Foyles Book Club
