About This Item
New York: Random House, 1930. Second edition. Hardcover. very good . ROCKWELL KENT. Quarto, 111 pages, violet cloth, some sunning, tender front hinge; ex libris Chicagoan Louis Edward Tilden, with a bookplate designed by Ralph Fletcher Seymour.
Signed by Rockwell Kent on the free endpaper ( Rare thus ! ). This was the first book published by Random House, whose logo was designed by Kent. This edition has an additional 3-page Bibliographical Note by Charles Edmund Merrill, Jr., in 1929 explaining that this reprint edition has all of Kent's illustrations in the RH edition, with some minor changes in the translation from the French. "For the optimistic, innocent Candide, and his equally guileless if more worldly-wise mentor, Dr. Pangloss, and their delicious adventures, still command our attention. The folly of philosophic and religious optimism is displayed with a vigour and wit that carries the reader away. Irony without exaggeration, a perfect restraint in its admirable humour, a gift for the 'hrowaway line' ('pour encourager les autres' is a classic example); all these show Voltaire's style and originality at their incomparable best --PRINTING AND THE MIND OF MAN, 204."

About Thomas J. Joyce And Company
Joyce And Company has been in business as a professional rare bookseller and appraiser since 1975. Owner Thomas Joyce was the regular book appraiser on Home & Garden TV\'s \"The Appraisal Fair\\\" program, on international broadcasts. Thomas Joyce was the co-discoverer of George Washington's personal copy of William Leybourn's 1679 edition of THE COMPLEAT SURVEYOR, from which young Washington learned some of his surveying skills at age 16. The book had vanished for nearly a century until its re-discovery in 2017. It is now back at Mt. Vernon.
