About This Item

New York: The Literary Guild , 1929. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Good. 11" by 7.5". Rockwell Kent . Voltaire's scandalous tale of 'Candide' with the illustrations by Rockwell Kent, first edition thus. A picaresque satire by Voltaire, considered his magnum opus. Candide was both a great success and great scandal; It was immediately banned after its original secret publication in 1759 due to it containing religious blasphemy, political sedition, and intellectual hostility. Today, it is praised for its sharp wit and insightful portrayal of the human condition. This edition is illustrated in text by American painter Rockwell Kent, a resetting of the limited Random House edition. Complete with unclipped dust wrapper. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear only, light bumping and fading to head and tail of spine. Dust wrapper unclipped and generally smart with minor shelf wear, chipped to head and tail of spine and extremities, age toning to wraps and spine, minor loss and chipping to rear wrap, tape repaired internally to wraps, visible to externals. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Very Good Indeed

Synopsis

Candide, ou l'Optimisme (in French) is a French satire written in 1759 by Voltaire, a philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment. The novella has been widely translated, with English versions titled Candide: or, All for the Best (1759); Candide: or, The Optimist (1762); and Candide: or, Optimism (1947). The novella begins with a young man, Candide, who is living a sheltered life in an Edenic paradise and being indoctrinated with Leibnizian optimism (or simply optimism) by his tutor, Pangloss.
