About This Item

[Privately printed], London, first edition, 1888. Quarter-morocco and Roxburghe boards with gilt rule, marbled endpapers, 4to,. [1], 199, 3, [1] pp. From The Library, Volume 2, 1890: "Mr. Gibbs has recently distributed to his friends and fellow members of the Roxburghe Club, copies of the very handsomely printed catalogue of the libraries at St. Dunstan's, Regent's Park and at Aldenham House. Mr. Gibbs's collections are rich in Bibles and Liturgies and in works relating to Charles I. They contain also a goodly array of first editions of English classics, which have been wisely supplemented by the reprints of Prof. Arber, Dr. Grosart and other industrious editors. As the catalogue is privately printed we have no right to subject it to minute criticism. We may note, however, that while each individual title appears to have been written with considerable care, for lack of a little editing the inconsistency of the headings is quite glaring." From the preface: "In distinguishing between the books that are contained in it, and the other contents of my Library, I have followed, but not uniformly, the plan adopted by Mr. Locker-Lampson in the First Part of his Catalogue. I have made the year 1700, generally, the dividing line; but I have included very many books of a later date, which either from being privately printed, or being rare from other causes, or else having some signal merit, may be especially interesting to the Book-lover. E. C. Gibbs, July 1889" on front free endpaper (probably Edith Caroline Gibbs, daughter of the author of this volume, Henry Hucks Gibbs*), one manuscript note to text. The errata leaf is a cancel with the cancelled leaf laid in. Spine rubbed and worn, boards heavily rubbed and sanded, contents Good. [*Henry Hucks Gibbs, 1st Baron Aldenham, 1819–1907.
