About This Item

Removed from a bound volume, octavo, pp. 12. A short narrow slit at center of one leaf near bottom edge (leaf with pages 3 and 4; see images for our best attempts at close-ups), and some instances of dull old creasing. The binding string has unraveled, as well, resulting in the sheets being gathered only (see image). Noted Theologian Enoch Pond was President of the Seminary at the time of this catalogue. Scholars and collectors of this type of material will notice and perhaps be amused by the fanciful layout of the term "Theological Seminary" on the title page of the catalogue. Whereas previous catalogues were printed by Samuel Smith only, and bore the title in a conservative manner, this edition has Smith joined by a second printer, Hill, who was perhaps influential in changing the manner of presentation to a livelier font? This was evidently a short-lived phenomenon, however, as by the catalogue of 1868-'69, "Theological Seminary" had returned to its traditional look and printer Hill had dropped off the imprint, leaving Samuel Smith the lone printer once again. An uncommon item, both in trade and institutional holdings, with a 2023 OCLC search returning American Antiquarian Society only. Protected in a clear display sleeve with white card-stock backing board. See Williamson, Bibliography State of Maine, Volume 1, Number 600.
