About This Item
Removed from a bound volume, or issued in now-perished wrappers, with binding string exposed, octavo, pp.11 + [1]. Printed entirely in Latin. FAIR-only condition with great fatigue along spine and internal gutter. Sporadic foxing. An uncommon item in trade or institutional holdings, with a 2024 OCLC search returning American Antiquarian Society only. Protected now in a clear display sleeve with white card-stock backing board. Enoch Pond, native of Wrentham Massachusetts and 1813 graduate of Brown University, came to the Bangor, Maine, Theological Seminary as a Professor of Theology in June 1832. It was not a financially rewarding position, nor was it prestigious, and almost from his arrival, in addition to his role as instructor, he was pressured to shoulder substantial administrative duties at the struggling institution. (Indeed, the American National Biography states that by the time Pond was named President of the Seminary in 1857, he had been "de facto" President for years.) One of these adjunct assignments was to increase the number of Seminary students, which he accomplished in part by "personally recruiting" [ANB, s.v. Pond, Enoch] from colleges in the region, including Bowdoin and Dartmouth. This notable copy of the 1837 Waterville (now Colby) College student body with Pond's signature was almost certainly used by him toward that end. See Williamson, Bibliography State of Maine, Volume 1, Number 2358.
