Afonso VI took the throne of Portugal, ousting his mother D. Luisa de Gusmão, who had ruled as regent since D. João IV's death in 1656. In November 1667, however, D. Afonso was imprisoned by his brother D. Pedro, who was named Prince Regent by the Cortes some months later and remained regent until his brother finally died (still under lock and key) in 1683. Pedro also, after a hasty annulment, married the French princess who had been D. Afonso's wife. To justify D. Pedro's ascension, Corrêa de Lacerda gives all the juicy gossip about D. Afonso's life, including the fever that left him partially paralyzed at age 3, his scandalous behavior throughout his adolescence and adulthood (consorting with prostitutes, breaking windows, attending dogfights), and his impotence—a serious problem to the new Bragança dynasty–which was used to justify the nullification of D. Afonso's marriage.Corrêa de Lacerda (b. Tojal, diocese of Vizeu, 1628; d. 1685), who had been one of D. Pedro II's tutors, was named Bishop of Porto by D.
