1904. The first 100 years of Volusia County, Florida, which includes Daytona Beach, are recalled in this reprint of Centennial History of Volusia County, Florida (1854-19540, edited by Ianthe Bond Hebel. Also included are excerpts from Florida, a Guide to the Southernmost State, a 1939 project of the WPA. The 110-page lightly illustrated 8 1/2" x 11" booklet is printed on 60# paper. The 3-color cover is printed on 80# card stock and protected with a vinyl sheet. The booklet includes An overview of the county's formation and early history, Hospitals, Mosquito Control, Bridges, Waterways, Roads, Climate, Agriculture, Churches, and Education, including Stetson University, Bethune-Cookman College, and Mary Karl Vocational School, banking, cultural development, garden clubs, the DAR, fishing, aviation, and NASCAR racing, and county officials in 1854, 1855, and 1954, and a number of advertisements from 1954. There is a section on Northwest Volusia County by Alice Strickland covering the communities of Seville, Pierson, Emporia, Volusia, Barberville and DeLeon Springs; sections on DeLand including a directory of the city's industries, a section on Ormond Beach by Edith Stanton and Tomoka State Park by Eileen H. Butts; and a section on the New Smyrna Beach area by Zelia Wilson Sweett. The Daytona Beach section includes the city government, a list of industries, the fire and police departments, the "World's Most Famous Summer Playground," newspapers, businesses, photographers, architects, attorneys, hotels, the Sea Zoo, etc. Also included are Reminiscences of Lawson Diggett, and an extensive report on the Golden Age of Racing on the Beach by Fred Booth. The excerpts from the WPA book include a section on Daytona Beach with nine points of interest, and stops at the Ruins of Tissimi Mission, the Tomoka River, Ormond, Port Orange, New Smyrna, Oak Hill, Fort Matanzas National Monument, Marineland, Ormond Beach, Seville, DeLeon Springs and DeLand. .
