In addition to the original Bewick engravings, this volume has been profusely extra-illustrated with the insertion of approximately 60 engraved portraits of notables (including Johnson, Hogarth, Bewick, Newton, Voltaire, and Somervile himself), sporting scenes (several in sanguine) and bird and animal studies (including an impressive double-page steel engraving of Landseer's "The Challenge"), the whole expanding Somervile's focus on hunting to the greater world of sport in general. London: W. Bowyer, W. Strahan, and R. Baldwin, 1748. Fifth edition . Full Leather. Good+/No Jacket. 12mo. 122 & 82 pages, plus eight plates including frontispiece. Bound in full contemporary calf with raised spine bands. Cover shows some surface abrasion at heel and bottom board, as well as slightly bumped corners. Top board is slightly bowed, causing a tear on the inside paste down. Inked name on front free end page. First twelve leaves with a crease in the lower outside corner. Volume remains tight and is otherwise clean and intact.

Hawkins, at the Middle-Temple Gate in Fleet Street,, 1757. 2 works in 1 vol., 8vo., Fourth Edition of each work, on laid paper, with copper-engraved frontispiece and 2 plates (first work), and 3 engraved plates (second work), frontispiece and title of first work mildly browned (title clipped at upper outer corner), neat nineteenth century signature on front paste-down; contemporary marbled boards, roan back with flat bands in gilt, neatly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, blue sprinkled edges, a very good, crisp, clean copy.
