FIRST FRENCH EDITION circa 1912, "Wonderland" series No.9972, 325 x 230 mm, 13 x 9 inches, colour illustrated card covers with large extra coloured illustration on upper cover (Spanish dancer cat with admirers, 1 with tambourine) and repeat of Japanese cat on lower cover, 6 text pages. 8 superb full page full colour illustrations of wonderful jolly dressed cats. 12 large black and white illustrations in the text, heightened with pale blue, also dressed cats. Delightful humorous French text, partly printed on colour plates. A little chipping to spine paper, 10 mm (½") at head, 20 mm at tail, corners very slightly worn, slight darkening of upper cover at top edge with very slight staining, very faintly showing also at top of first page and last text pages, 10 mm (½") closed edge tear to 1 text page. A very good plus copy, as uncommon in the original English version as in the French. The colour plates: Scottish cat plays bagpipes; Irish pig farmer cat goes to market; French cats learn golf; Italian lady cat goes to market; flirtatious Japanese cat dances for 2 admirers; Dutch cat and kitten among the windmills bring milk for the famous cheese; Swiss cats on honeymoon are scared by the bear of Berne; and Red Indian cat in head-dress and moccasins draws back his bow.
