About This Item
IN TWO VOLUMES. (Haddington: Printed and Published by George Miller and Son: 1813 [Vol. I] and 1814 [Vol. II]) Quarter leather boards (that is, hard covers) pp. viii, 616; iv, 620. Illustrated. A rich repository of wisdom for the 'lower classes': service and trades, child-rearing, natural history, the errors of drunkenness and low life; prose and verse of an improving nature. Sturdily bound by an early owner, with the title stamped on both front boards; while the bindings may not be contemporaneous with the contents, they are certainly in our view nineteenth century. All edges of Volume I are uncut, but Volume II has been trimmed, so that the height of Volume I is 183 mm while Volume II is 168 mm tall. Volume I lacks a leaf, namely pp. 427-8, and a corner torn from pp. 59-60 has resulted in the loss of a few words. There a few ink annotations to pp. 207-210 of Volume I. Front inner hinge of Volume I is detached. Some foxing and browning to the leaves. The issues are in generally very good condition.
