About This Item
George Bell & Sons, London, 1884. Reprint. Hardcover (Embossed Cloth). Rebound. Illustrator: Illustrated. Preface by author and chest endings. Colour illustrated frontispiece, showing 'The Sphynn"  where the white playing the first move mates in 11 moves. The frontispiece is protected by tissue guard which is round and foxed. Throughout the text there are examples of different types of games. Red coloured self embossed boards; and, there is a gilt embossed chessboard to the front panel with all chessmen in place. Title says it all. First published in 1848. This book has been rebound  with new end pages and dark red coloured back strip and quarter points of the boards. Unfortunately in the process of rebinding the book the pages holding the preface (4 pages) have not been caught in the text block. Surprisingly, only relatively light browning of the text block edges with a few marks to the text block edges. Foxing to the first few and last few pages of the book. Previous owners name to the top edge of the title page (with the date of 1887); and, to the verso of the frontispiece another owner's rubber stamp has been placed. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. [19  of which 15 are titles from the publishing house], boards - VIII, [1], 2 513, [30  complete catalogue of Bohn's Libraries] pages,. Please refer to accompanying picture (s).
