1810 Monstrelet Chronicles Medieval 100 Years War Orleans Burgundy Atlas 13v SET

The 'Chronicles' of Jean Froissart have continually been perceived as an important work on medieval history for centuries, since its inception in the 14th-century. While some of the subjects covered are repetitive and insignificant, many topics are of utmost importance including famous battles, deaths of monarchs, and the Catholic Church Great Schism. According to Adams in the "Manual of Historical Literature,"

"The 'Chronicles' are universally considered as the most vivid and faithful picture we have of events in the fourteenth century. As a picture of the most favorable side of chivalry, the work has no equal."

In 15th-century France, Enguerrand de Monstrelet began working on another collection of 'Chronicles', which were highly influenced by Froissart. Monstrelet's work deals with the second half of the Hundred Years' War and is considered valuable because of its accuracy and authentic sources.

This 1810, 13-volume set includes Monstrelet's 'Chronicles' along with an impressive, illustrated atlas tome.

Known as one of the English Lake Poets, Samuel Taylor Coleridge was one of the most notable 19th-century English romance poets. Coleridge's longest poem was 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'. Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban was a 17th-century French engineer who, after serving as the Marshal of France, became known as the greatest engineer of his time. It was from his surveys and developments in fortifications that propelled him to engineering fame. In fact, his fortification philosophies were used for nearly a century after his life. Vauban understood that at some point, all forts would fall, no matter how powerful. From this, Vauban sought to improve fort designs to absorb as much of the attack force as possible, even including house and structures to support fortification walls.

Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
