About This Item

New York:: Pantheon,, (2001.). Hardcover first edition -. Very near fine in a like dustjacket.. First printing. Although, as she explains in her preface, she first went to Greenland to 'get above treeline' - something she could not do in the mountains after she was hit by lightening - Ehrlich wound up fascinated by the true heroes and first explorers and settlers of the Arctic - the Inuits - and over the next 7 years, she traveled back there many times, in every season, although she grew to prefer the 'ice and failing sun' of winter. Her inspiration during these trips was the Danish-Inuit explorer Rasmussen, who launched 7 expeditions between 1900-1933. Index. Map endpapers. 377 pp.
