HENRY VENN (1725-1797), was an English evangelical minister and one of the founders of the Clapham Sect, a small but highly influential evangelical group within the Anglican Church. 'The Compleat Duty of Man' (London, 1763), a work in which he intended to supplement the teaching embodied in the anonymous 'Whole Duty of Man' from an evangelical perspective. A portrait of him, by John Russell, hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, London. Venn was a key member the 'Clapham Sect' - its members were chiefly prominent and wealthy evangelical Anglicans who shared common political views concerning the liberation of slaves, the abolition of the slave trade and the reform of the penal system. The group's name originates from Clapham, then a village south of London (today part of south-west London), where both Wilberforce and Thornton, the sect's two most influential leaders, resided and where many of the group's meetings were held. They were supported by Beilby Porteus, Bishop of London, who sympathised with many of their aims. **The Complete Duty of Man, or A system of Doctrinal and Practical Christianity : To which are added forms of Prayer and offices of Devotion for the various circumstances of life. By H. Venn. New Edition., Carefully Revised and corrected.** 8vo. **Will be well-packed for posting/shipping**. [ Rosley Books for Antiquarian books, Cumberland, Everyman, GKC, Inklings, Keswick.
