About This Item
Bruxelles: Imprimerie et Librairie de Ve. Wouters, 1850. First Belgian Edition. 12mo (ca. 19cm.); publisher's blue wrappers printed within typographically decorative border; 160pp. Light chipping and wear to jacket extremities, spine a bit toned, else Very Good and fresh overall. Memoirs of the French police informant whose activities were discovered during the February Revolution of 1848. The author grew up a street urchin in Paris and was himself involved in several Republican uprisings, in 1832, 1834, and 1839. Sometime in the mid-1830's he joined the army but fled back to Paris and worked as a shoemaker. This memoir, which was first published in the same year in Paris, claims that he became a "mouchard" (police informant) when he was threatened with arrest for desertion.
