About This Item
Philadelphia: A Quaker Action Group (AQAG), 1970. Handbill. 8.5x14 inch leaflet printed both sides, horizontal fold crease, "Nov. 1970" penned in corner, otherwise very good. From a campaign to stop US Navy bombing practice on the island of Culebra, in which AQAG worked with other activists including Rubén Berríos, President of the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP), to conduct civil disobedience and occupy part of the shore in protest. A number of the activists were charged with trespassing on military property and spent months in prison. After several years, sustained protests resulted in the Navy moving its targeting exercises away from Culebra, instead bombing another nearby site, Vieques, which gave rise to its own protest movement.
