London: Collins [Collins Thriller], 1960. [Crime Mystery] FIRST EDITION WITH ORIGINAL JACKET ARTWORK. Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.192. Publisher's deep purple cloth with silver titles to spine. With the dust-jacket illustrated by William Randell, priced at 10/6. Together with the original artwork hand-painted by Randell (23 x 18cm), with original notes in ink and pencil to backing board. Presented in a custom-made fleece-lined navy quarter morocco clamshell box, with gilt titles to spine and navy cloth over sides. Total dimensions 27 x 22cm. Light wear to jacket edges. Artwork in lovely bright condition, with some wear due to its original use. Near fine. Originally a career criminal himself, MacKenzie is unusual amongst crime-writers for making many of his protagonists criminals, rather than detectives. A unique presentation of this story, in which an ex-burglar turned burglary insurance salesman is blackmailed by a man from his past to take part in one last big job.
