About This Item

Madrid: Emprenta Real, 1601. Map. Image measures 7" x 9", sheet measures 11 5/8" x 15". Madrid: Emprenta Real, (1601).

This rare 1601 map of the New World was one of first maps based on official Spanish sources. Depicts the audiencia of Panama, with rivers, coastal features, and settlements labeled. Audencias refer to provincial or territorial high courts administered by the Spanish empire, which served as important government institutions in colonial America. This is the first edition of this map from 1601, published within "Descripcion de las Indias Occidentalis", a geographical supplement to Herrera's seminal work "Historia Generale." In very good condition, with minor staining to margins. Discoloration along original centerfold, and some small worm holes at top edge.

Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas (1559-1625) was the first royal historian of the West Indies, and his position gave him unusual access to official sources and other documents.
