Philadelphia: Jacob Johnson & Co.. Very Good-. 1805. First American Edition. Leather. 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 1805 Jacob Johnson & Co. Philadelphia. 1st American edition of Johnson's seminal dictionary, with the Preface to the Folio edition and Johnson's "Grammar" included. Xl; aprrox 900 pp. Full marbled calf with original green morocco label title lettered in gilt. Soundly bound and complete. Prior ownership of a James E Mifflens in manuscript to front flyleaf dated 1808. Leather rubbed with light abrasion at corner tips; small nick from leather at crown. Light creasing and crazing to leather at spine; text block slightly thickened at front edge with boards splaying a little. Occasional mild spotting to page stock but generally clean and bright. Entries in two columns are abstracted and abbreviated from the Folio edition. This Johnson printed Philadelphia edition is generally considered the best of the early American editions; its entries bear considerable similarity in their abridged state to the content of the original 4 volume 4to London edition.
