Collated, complete.'A Dictionary of the English Language' is one of the most influential dictionaries in the history of the English language, and was the pre-eminent English dictionary under the 'Oxford English Dictionary' was completed one-hundred and seventy-three years after Johnson's was published.Johnson took around seven years to complete this dictionary, and worked on it single-handedly.'A History of the Language' and 'An English Grammar' are prefixed.Including the author's preface to the folio, as well as a considerable number of extra words which had not been contained in the London Octavo.Samuel Johnson was a noted English author of the eighteenth century, well perceived in his friend James Boswell's 'The Life of Samuel Johnson', which is considered to be one of the most important biographies ever written. In a half leather binding with calf to the spine and vellum to the extremities, and marbled paper to the boards. Externally, rubbed. A small amount of loss to the head and tail of the spine. Vellum is discoloured and marked. Rubbing has resulted in loss of paper to the boards. Minor bumping to the extremities. Surface cracks to the spine. Spine label is rubbed with a small chip. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age toned and generally clean with scattered spots. Good
